So today's adventure involved transporting Elisha's beetle project to his garage up in northern VT. The beetle will be used for what fabrication is left and in good shape. This will be cut out and used on a new project, as Wyotech made him cut his bracing out before he graduated.

We got to the shop where the beetle had been sitting for a few years around 6:30. In this picture, the truck is around 12 feet from the edge of the photo on the right side.

You can also see some of the stuff that ended up riding along. I was told the bug would fit fine; without sticking up or hanging off. Even the tailgate would close. Well, turns out that while that is true of a longbed, this is a shortbed.

The first step here was to get the inner fender aprons on the gate, and slowly work it forward over the fender humps in the bed.Elisha then climbed up into the bed, underneath the body. He hoisted it onto the roof while I lifted from the back, standing inside the body as well, about even with the rear window. As the body moved forward, I was caught between the back of the body and the tailgate. My only option was to climb in the bed and lift by the suspension mounting points. We eventually got the body up to about where it is in that photo and we were really happy about that. Then we looked around and realized there was a Volkswagen holding us in the bed of the truck. Our only option was to climb out onto the roof, step down to door, and down again to the ground.

After we loaded some other bits into the bed and cab, we were ready to set off.

Upon leaving the shop we left for Lebanon. We had plans for lunch, but the place didn't open for an hour or so. We decided we'd go fill up on gas, and then go kill time at Elisha's apartment.

$34 dollars later, we headed to Elisha's apartment so his Beetles could bond.

It was now time to head for lunch. We were going to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which is located well within walking distance of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. The averted gazes and upturned noses were a lot of fun.

After a fantastic lunch at Jewel (they were having a buffet for $9.99; we didn't even know that when we showed up, very pleasant surprise) we started heading north.

When we got to the shop we started to unload the bug. Elisha's brother already had his Mercedes in there, so we were dancing around that the whole time.

Getting the bug out of the truck was a fairly uneventful affair and the only difficult part of putting it in the shed was lifting it high enough to clear the 280. We almost dropped it on the passenger fender.

This dog from the house a cross the street came over to say hi. She was a really awesome dog. PART TIME SHOP DOG FOR THE WIN!

On the way home I wanted to stop and see the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It's an abandoned house that I am totally obsessed with. I really want to live in this place, it's just so gorgeous.

I was glad to see it had been properly winterized, so someone is watching out for it.

All in all it was a pretty fun experience, despite my aching back. I quite enjoyed putting along at a slow pace while we looked off in barns and back yards for old cars and whatnot. It seems like every weekend Elisha and I come up with some hair brained scheme like this, and it's always a blast. We have plans to start recording it, like a backwoods northeastern Roadkill. Until then I'll just have to keep making posts like this to keep you guys up to date on the shenanigans.

Did you guys put something in between the bug and the roof of the ranger? Seems like it would just tear up the top of your nice truck.
